Business of the Month - The Barbara Gordon Montessori School

In a world of indecision about how education should be done, a 40-year-old school in Colleyville quietly delivers a century-old tradition of Montessori education. At the Barbara Gordon Montessori School the exclusive focus is children. Developmental needs of children form the basis for education that embraces the whole child—Education for Life.

BGMS was founded at the insistence of local parents. Barbara Gordon was head of St. Alcuin Montessori School in Dallas, when her Grapevine and Southlake neighbors challenged her to deliver the same exemplary education locally. In 1971 the Montessori Academy of Grapevine opened its first Primary class for children ages 3-6. Elementary and Toddler classes were soon added. The expanding school relocated to Colleyville on 9 acres of wooded seclusion. While Barbara headed schools in Connecticut and Hawaii, the school was renamed in her honor by the grateful parents.

BGMS today serves children from 2 months through 14 years of age in classes for Parents-and-Infants, Toddlers, Primary (3-6), Elementary and Adolescents (middle school). The first middle school class graduated in 2011. Gardens, playgrounds and 10 buildings comprise a Montessori village tucked away in Colleyville. The BGMS community is a multicultural collection of families who gather frequently to celebrate their diversity and affirm dedication to providing an outstanding education to all their children.

BGMS is recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). Dr. Maria Montessori herself founded AMI in 1929 to protect the integrity of her educational method, and it remains the gold standard, the guarantee of authentic Montessori education. Teachers at BGMS hold AMI diplomas as well as college degrees. BGMS administrators are active in Montessori organizations at the local, national and international levels.
What is Montessori education?

Most private schools offer strong academics. BGMS delivers on strong academics, while keeping focus on the broader picture. The culture of a Montessori school emphasizes informed choice making, inner discipline, responsibility for one’s place in the school community, and care for others. Montessori education results in social, academic and executive skills—for the benefit of the child and society. The school experience is reality-based and practical. Montessori truly is Education for Life.

Montessori education is brain-based learning. Montessori education puts the biological development sequence to work in everyday life, with tangible manipulatives for learning. Concrete learning enables the brain to reach abstractions, producing knowledge.

The hand is the instrument of the mind. At all ages Montessori education is hands-on. Children touch in order to learn, and freedom of movement is key. These freedoms are standard in Montessori learning environments, enabling the child to explore, form concepts, and develop independence, responsibility, and a life long love of learning.

Montessori children are encouraged to learn through trial and error. With repetition comes mastery, and then self-confidence. Through exploration, they observe and learn what works and what doesn’t. Self-education is the result, with guidance by Montessori teachers.

Each classroom is a scientifically prepared environment, and the class is a mixed-age society in miniature. Children enter each level as novices and emerge three years later as competent leaders. Social skills for courteous living and collaborative work are learned every day.

October 2011 Business of the Month--The Lodge Barber Shop

Established in June 2010, The Lodge Gentlemen's Barbershop is reviving the lost art of manliness by letting you rediscover the Barbershop. As a child, I went to the barbershop on Main Street in my hometown. It was called “Flores Barbershop.” I remember being fascinated with the barber “stuff”. But what I remember most was the distinct manliness of the place. Even as a young child, I could sense that a barbershop was a cool hang out for men. Twenty-five years later, I’m rediscovering the barbershop. And you should too...it’s a great activity to do with your father or your son. Men need traditions that can help bond them together, and visiting the barbershop with your father or son is a great tradition to begin in your family. Many men have been going to the same barber all their life and have introduced their sons to the same chair and the same barber. What a great way to bond with the men in your life!
