Our Great City
June 2010 Family of the Month--The Ruddick Family
Shelley, Jacqueline and William have called the wonderful community of Grapevine “home” for the past 18 years. After relocating from Pennsylvania in 1992, they quickly became acclimated to the warm Texas weather and the warm Texas hospitality. Moving to a friendly community with outstanding schools and many opportunities to be involved made the adjustment easy for Shelley and her children.
Shelley grew up in a very traditional Massachusetts town where her family still resides. Great support from her parents were the keys to her sense of commitment and overall perseverance in life. Ice skating, skiing and outdoor sports were her passions during her childhood. Shelley was Captain of both the high School Cheerleading squad and the High School Track Team as well a class Representative on Student Counsel. She spent time working on school events, working at her first job (McDonalds) and as a ski instructor at a local ski area.
William, Shelley, and Jacqueline Ruddick
After moving to Pennsylvania in 1977 to attend West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania, she graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree and immediately began working as an analyst for the parent company of a major supermarket chain. The opportunity to relocate to Texas 11 years later was a major decision but one she would not regret. Both her children were born in West Chester and were only 2 and 4 when the relocation took place and have always considered Texas their home.
Shelley has spent most of her working career in Texas in the sales and marketing area and has held the position of Vice President for Bank of the West in Grapevine for the past 6 years, specializing in Business Development, Marketing and Advertising. As a locally owned and operated bank, it provides the opportunity for her to continue her volunteerism as a member of the Executive Board of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Women’s Division of the Grapevine Chamber, a member of the Southlake and Colleyville Chambers of Commerce and a member of the HDGA (Historic Downtown Grapevine Association) where she just finished her board term as Treasurer. Serving on many committee and planning events for the Chamber and the Women’s Division seems to be one thing she has a hard time saying no to… but she is learning. In her “off-time”, her passions include tennis, where she currently plays on a Ladies double team and a Mixed Double team, and tries to spend time on the golf course whenever the opportunity arises. Spending holidays with her children, quiet time and traveling with her boyfriend “Panda” are things that bring great joy in her life.
Jacqueline graduated from Grapevine High School, was formerly a select softball player and member of the GHS Marching Band and was very honored to be selected as one of the Drum majors her senior year at GHS. A 4th year college student, Jacqueline continues her 5 year musical studies program at the University of Texas in Arlington, choosing a career path in Musical Education. She is considered a very gifted and passionate musician with a true spirit for the “Arts”.
William is beginning his junior year at Texas State University in San Marcos as a business major, transferring from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas after experiencing football at the small college level. A graduate of Grapevine High school, Will began his freshman year playing baseball and football but soon realized his love of football took precedence. He continues to be active in many sports but intends to focus on his studies the remainder of his college term.
With a volunteer spirit and always encouraging of her children to give back to the community, Shelley, Jacqueline and William have made a yearly commitment to volunteer their time delivering for the Christmas Spirit Program of the Grapevine Chamber Women’s Division. It’s our opportunity as a family to “give back” to those less fortunate seniors in our area, making their Christmas season a little brighter. Volunteering for “Greet the Troops” at the airport has also been a yearly uplifting experience especially on Christmas morning.
Our family chooses to make a difference, so we support Grapevine in the small ways we can. Grapevine is our home and we are very lucky to live in such a supportive and wonderful community.
