Our Great City
May 2010 Family of the Month--The Mattson Family
Gregg, Elizabeth, Brynne, Lacey and Jacob Mattson have lived in Colleyville for over 19 years. It is the only home they have known as a family and they delightfully anticipate that will remain the case for the foreseeable future. Gregg and Elizabeth met while working as a pilot and flight attendant for American Airlines. With an ideal commute to DFW and a growing family, Colleyville seemed like the perfect place to build a new home.
Gregg, like many pilots, enjoys other business ventures. From 1993-2001 Gregg built custom homes in NE Tarrant County and Fort Worth, both with another builder and independently. Currently Gregg and a partner have a company, Copper Elegance, that sells interior and exterior handmade copper products for the home. Both of these ventures have permitted Gregg to spotlight our local area, but also allow him to contribute to the creativity and design of custom homes. Gregg loves coaching basketball and he has coached numerous seasons of both girls and boys basketball.
The Mattson Family--Gregg, Elizabeth, Brynne, Lacey and Jacob
Elizabeth has truly come to call Texas home. She has immersed herself in the community primarily through the activities and interests of her children. She is most passionate about serving others and teaching her children to do the same. Additionally, Elizabeth has enjoyed CBS and BSF, National Charity League, Recipe Club, and a bit of tennis. She is excited about the start-up of a new venture for moms and sons, Second Saturday. This will provide a monthly opportunity for mothers and their boys to volunteer together, starting in the fall.
The Mattsons have hosted exchange students twice. One girl came for the summer of 2001 from Ireland. Last year they hosted a high school girl from Colombia who attended CHHS with Brynne and Lacey. As a result, both experiences gave the family greater cultural awareness and long lasting relationships. Additionally, the Mattsons enjoy mission work. They have served short-term missions in the local area, greater Texas and internationally.
Brynne is a freshman bilingual education major at Texas A&M. While at CHHS she was active in the theater program and Students Standing Strong, but her passion was Spanish. She started a partnership between National Spanish Honor Society students and elementary students in bilingual classrooms, Bilingual Buddies. To her delight this program continues in GCISD and is an encouragement to all of the students and teachers involved. Brynne plans to take her Spanish back into the ESL or bilingual classroom (and beyond) after her graduation in 2013.
Lacey is a current senior at CHHS. She has been a rep and officer for Students Standing Strong throughout high school and a NHS member. However, the majority of her time was spent at the GCISD Natatorium where she was a club swimmer and 4-year Varsity letterman and CHHS swim captain for two years. Lacey will be attending Colorado State University in the Honors College with a mechanical engineering major and possibly an interdisciplinary focus in biomedical engineering.
Jacob is a current 7th grader who, like his sisters, spent the bulk of his elementary years at a St. Vincent’s Cathedral School. When he came to GCISD as a 5th grader he jumped right in and was elected President of his class. Since attending CMS, he has participated in Students Standing Strong and FCA. Jacob played a couple of years of youth football, but then determined that his real love was basketball. He continues to play basketball both in local leagues and at CMS (he is always open to a pick-up game at Lifetime too.) This past fall Jacob was able to get some playing time as one of the quarterbacks for 7th grade football team and looks forward to the 8th grade Colt athletic opportunities.
Even after nearly 20 years the Mattson family is happy to call Colleyville home and Colleyville is where the heart is.
