Alzheimer's Memory Walk

10/09/2010 - 8:00am

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting North Central Texas residents to become Champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Northeast Tarrant County Memory Walk®. Grapevine Mills Mall is the site of the 2010 Memory Walk being held on Saturday, October 9. Hundreds of walkers are expected to participate in this year’s event to raise awareness and funds to fight the disease. Returning again this year are our Titanium Sponsors Transamerica Long Term Care and Rosalyn G. Rosenthal. Joining them is a new sponsor, Esperanza Senior Living. Two other supporters, Funeral Directors Life Insurance Corporation (FDLIC) and Waterview Retirement Redefined, round out our chapter-wide sponsors.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic that is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that someone in America develops Alzheimer's disease every 70 seconds. By mid-century someone will develop Alzheimer’s disease every 33 seconds.

“There has never been a greater need for the citizens of North Central Texas to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Memory Walk,” said Theresa Hocker, executive director of the North Central Texas Chapter. “As many as 5.3 million Americans have this disease and over 47,000 individuals are living with Alzheimer’s disease in North Texas. Funds raised through Memory Walk will provide support services such as a 24/7 Helpline, support groups, education programs, counseling, website access and care consultation, while also contributing to critically needed research.”

The Lone Star Parrot Head Club is serving as the honorary co-chairs for the 2010 Walk. Last year their team raised over $10,000 to end Alzheimer’s and support chapter services. They are planning to exceed that total this year. Teams are at the heart of Memory Walk and team fundraising efforts are an important reason this year’s goal was set at $60,000. To participate in the Northeast Tarrant County Memory Walk on October 9, an online registration site is available for individuals and teams at http://memorywalk10.kintera.org/NETarrant .
